LUCID 2023 COMMITTEE
Jackie Kerwood - Chair
I am the Claims Philosophy Manager for Aviva, having worked in Health and Protection claims for over 15 years. I love my job and am passionate about making sure people at all levels of experience get access to excellent industry training. This will be my 3rd Lucid conference and I am thrilled to be chairing the 2023 event in York.
I am also currently chair of Select 74, and prior to this I spent 6 years on the Health Claims Forum committee.
Lynn Timmons - Vice Chair
I have been a member of the FOCUS committee for over 10 years now, including past Chair. I’m looking forward to working on my first LUCID event.
I have been in the protection industry for almost 30 years, having been in underwriting for most of that time but recently moving into a business development role at Gen Re. I sit on many industry bodies such as ILAG, the Income Protection Task Force, Women in Protection and the ABI Mental Health working party. I am committed to the ongoing development of our underwriters and claims assessors as well as making a difference to our industry.
I have worked within underwriting and claims for over 20 years in a variety of roles. I have been a member of the AMUS committee for the last 6 years.
I am passionate about protection insurance as a force for good in society and how we ensure as many people as possible can benefit from the peace of mind insurance brings.
My career started in insurance in 2010 as a customer service advisor, moving over to underwriting in 2013 with AVIVA. I then moved to Canada Life where I managed a team and worked in group protection before moving to London in 2017 and into reinsurance. I have now worked at Pacific Life Re since July 2019. I am vice chair of Select 74 and in 2018 I was nominated as a Woman of Influence.
I joined the AMUS committee last year and am thrilled to be involved in planning the next LUCID event. Having only attended once previously I’m hoping to bring some new ideas (and my relentless enthusiasm!) to the table.
I’m passionate about continuous development in the changing landscape of underwriting, encouraging discussion and thought within the industry and supporting knowledge sharing across underwriting professionals.
I’m currently Head of Claims at Guardian, having joined in September 2018 having previously worked for a reinsurer. Prior to that I worked in a number Claims roles for different insurers, and have over 25 years’ experience in Claims in total.
A current committee member of the Health Claims Forum, I joined the committee in 2009 and have previously served as Chair.
I’m really passionate about the role of Claims, both in terms of delivering to customers when they need it most, and challenging conventional thinking to ensure that as an Industry we don’t rest on our laurels and continuously look at how we can do things better.
I’m looking forward to representing the Claims community on the LUCID committee for our 2023 event, and contributing to another successful LUCID conference.
I have been on the FOCUS committee for over 10 years having held various roles including Chair.
I joined the LUCID organising committee in 2013 and had the honour of Chairing LUCID in 2019 brining the conference to Scotland for the first time. I’m a firm believer that LUCID is an excellent platform for bringing people together to hear market leading updates on medical and technical developments.
I’m a Senior Underwriter with Zurich Life having joined the old Eagle Star in 1999 and became an Underwriter in 2001 and have been with the company throughout my career to date.
My main areas of interest / expertise are within automated / expert underwriting systems having led our introduction and expansion of these systems since 2007 in Zurich Life Ireland.
This is my first year on the HIS Committee and 2023 will be my first visit to LUCID which I am really excited about and looking forward to hearing about market developments from a medical, product and technological viewpoint.
I have been a member of the Health Claims Forum committee for 12 years. I have held 3 officer roles as Treasurer, Vice Chair and then Chair and also support the organisation of our 4 Forum days per year. I have been part of the LUCID Committee for 2013 2015, 2017, 2019 and the virtual 2021 event as a Health Claims Forum representative.
I choose to be a member of both HCF and LUCID to provide our industry with the opportunity to attend events that give access to relevant educational sessions that can make us better at what we do in claims, medical underwriting and insurance medicine.
I’m the Chief Underwriter with Irish Life with over 25 years experience in Underwriting and Life Insurance.
This is my 3rd LUCID conference representing the Health Insurance Society (HIS). I’m really looking forward to York 2023 and increasing the number of Irish speakers and delegates. I will also be encouraging the various clubs to consider sponsoring non-managerial underwriters and claims assessors to attend LUCID 2023.

Dr Debbie Smith
I'm CMO for the Swiss Re team of doctors supporting our clients in UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. I held dual roles until recently, working as an Acute Physician in the UK's largest NHS Trust before moving full time into the CMO role for EMEA.
